Subtended Angle - The closer you sit to the screen the larger the image appears and the more of your visual field is taken up. This "field of vision" is called the subtended angle. The optimum seating distance is where the screen that it takes up at least 15% our vertical and 30% of your horizontal field of vision.
16:9 Screen - Since the screen width should take up at least 30 degree field of view, the screen width should be 61.9% of seating distance from the screen. An easier way to calculate it is to multiply screen width by 1.6. For an eight foot wide screen this would mean that you would want to sit 13 feet from the screen.
4:3 Screen - Since the screen width should take up at least 30 degree field of view, the screen width should be 54% of seating distance from the screen.
